New Bills Effective 2007-2008 School Year:

Senate Bill 282---Notification of College Credit Opportunities

Effective date: June 15, 2007. Applies beginning with the 2007-08 school year.

Each school year, a school district shall notify the parent of each district student enrolled in 9th grade or above of the availability of programs in the district under which a student may earn college credit, including AP programs, dual-credit programs, joint high school and college credit programs, and IB programs.

 

Senate Bill 415---Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment Program Advisory Committee

Effective date: September 1, 2007.

This bill converts the acanthosis nigricans screening program already in the Health and Safety Code to the Type 2 Diabetes Education and Risk Assessment Program, effective September 1, 2007. The bill also extends, beginning with the 2007-08 school year, the screening requirement (previously limited to public and private schools in 11 service center regions) to additional service center regions as funding allows.

 

House Bill 1844---Administration of Certain Tests to Home-Schooled Students

Effective date: June 15, 2007. Applies beginning with the 2007-08 school year.

This bill amends the Education Code to require a school district to permit a home-schooled student to participate in the administration of the PSAT/NMSQT or a college AP exam offered by the district. The student shall pay the same fee to participate in the test that a student enrolled in the district is required to pay.

 

House Bill 2171---School Start Date Exception for Certain Districts

Effective date: June 15, 2007. Applies beginning with the 2007-08 school year.

A school district that does not offer each grade level from kindergarten through grade 12 and whose students generally attend school in another state for the grade levels the district does not offer may start school on any date permitted under the law of the other state.

Effective date: June 15, 2007. Applies beginning with the 2007-08 school year.
