Bills Affective 2007-2008 School Year

College Credit Opportunities

All students attending or home schooled students eligible to attend Merkel High School will have the following opportunities to earn college credit and/or take exams available to them.

Dual Enrollment

Students may earn up to 12 hours of college credit by being enrolled in the dual credit program through Western Texas College. Courses offered are College English 1301 and 1302, College Algebra 1314, and College History 1301. Although College History 1301 and College Math 1314 do not count as dual credit for high school requirements, they do count for college credit. English 1301 and 1302 (both of which must be taken) count as dual credit for English IV and college hours. Failure to pass English 1301 and/or 1302 will result in failing English IV, and students will not graduate.

All necessary applications, transcripts, TAKS scores and THEA exam scores must be completed and turned in to the Senior English teacher before the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year in order to be enrolled in any college class.

For additional information, parents and/or students may contact Mrs. Amerine or Mrs. Minze at Merkel High School or Ruth Richburg at Western Texas College at 325-573-8511 extension 242.

Advanced Placement

All students and specifically students who are enrolled in Advanced Placement courses at Merkel High School will have the opportunity to take AP exams in a variety of subject areas. Colleges and universities may award credit based on their individual standards after reviewing final scores of the exams. Exams are $84.00 each minus applicable fee reductions.
